Breakaway Clubs Temporary Move To Lancing

As most of you are aware, the Charles Dickens will shortly be undergoing refurbishment, during which time it will be closed for 6 to 8 weeks. Therefore, Breakaways last meeting here will be on the 13th of May.

Arrangements have been made for us to meet at the Farmers in Lancing as of the 20th of May. The Farmers is less than 5 minutes walk south of the railway station where South and North Street meet and there is ample car parking all around.

On the 20th entry will be free to all, and alongside the usual nibbles there will be extras such as cheese and pineapple, sausages on sticks, small cakes etc.

We will have exclusive use of a bar which has an exit door to a smoking shelter. There will be no charge to the club for the bar meaning that the entry fee can be reduced to £1 whilst we are there.

Unfortunately there is no facility to hold our darts evenings and so our June darts night will be arranged for the middle of June at the Locomotive in Littlehampton where they do a nice little super. Watch notice board for details.

We thank you all for supporting the club and look forward to seeing you there on the 20th.

Friday 16th November - Singles Disco at the Shoreham Centre. Tickets £5 on the door.

Friday 23rd November - 60's, 70's and 80's Disco night. Tickets £5 on the door.

Tuesday 13th November - Club Night at the Charles Dickens 8.30.pm-11pm. Join us for a bit of a dance and chat. It's your last chance to book for the canal trip on Sunday. Also DJ and dancing, raffle, membership snowball and £5 door prize.

Sunday 18th November - A Canal Boat Trip on the Chichester Canal. Meet at 10am at the cafe in the Canal Basin for boat trip and lunch out.

Tuesday 20th November - Club Night at the Charles Dickens 8.30pm - 11pm with DJ and dancing, raffle membership snowball and don't forget the chance of £5 door prize if you arrive before 9.30pm. Thinking about a good walk on Sunday? Let Enid know if you're going and they will wait for you if you're a bit late.

Sunday 25th November - Walking with Keith at the helm! Meet at 10am at the south gate of Hangleton Church for an approximate 8 mile circular walk going up to Devils' Dyke. To get there turn off the A27 onto the A293 for Portslade (the road to Sainsburys). Turn left at the first roundabout then left by the green 500 yards on. Park by the green. The church is at the north end. Take a banana, you'll need the energy. More info...

Tuesday 27th November - Club Night at the Charles Dickens 8.30pm-11pm with DJ and dancing or maybe no dancing if you're still aching from the walk! Raffle, membership snowball and the chance of £5 door prize if you arrive before 9.30pm.

Our three Sunday events in July proved popular and the sun shone. Firstly, the committee would like to thank Geoff (and Brenda for helping him) for all his hard work arranging a Beetle Drive at his house and providing a splendid buffet. We all had a fantastic time and proved once again that this game is very entertaining. Jean and Brett took the prizes for the top scores. Colin won the Pitch & Putt at Arundel with only Martin scoring a hole in one! Most of us then walked to the Black Rabbit for lunch al fresco by the river. Ray’s outing to the Arun & Wey canal was enjoyable for those that travelled to Loxwood especially with a meal at the Onslow Arms before the boat trip.

OCTOBER 2007 PROGRAMME

Sunday 10th April - A Countryside Walk around Burpham and Arundel - Keith has volunteered once again to lead and hopefully the weather will be as good as last time. Meet at the car park behind the George and Dragon in Burpham at 10.30am for an eight /nine mile walk. For further details or see Keith on club nights.

Tuesday 12th April – Club night at the Charles Dickens, dancing to music by Gordon, raffle and membership draw.

Saturday 16th April – Hot Buttered Soul, An evening of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Soul & Motown Classics at King Alfred, Kingsway, Hove 8 pm til 1am Tickets £6 at the door.

Tuesday 19th April – Club night at the Charles Dickens, dancing to music by Keith, raffle and membership draw.

Friday 22nd April - Spectrum at Shoreham Centre, Pond Road, Shoreham, from 8pm to 12pm. Entrance Fee £5 with music by Mick Casey. Due to low numbers in March this may well be the last time this dance is held so please support it this month to keep it going.

Friday 30th May Arun Solos at Arundel Cricket Club on A27 toward Chichester. Its 8.30 – 11.30pm and tickets are £6 on the door. The very reasonably priced drinks and good dance music make it worth going. They give a door prize too! See you there maybe.

20 Years of Breakaway Reunion

Our 20 Years of Breakaway Reunion at the Parish Hall in Lancing was a great success. After months of planning, we filled the hall bringing current members together with past, reuniting friends and forging new friendships. There were plenty of photographs for reminiscing earlier events, many it seems were in fancy dress, maybe something we should try again. The impressive buffet, arranged by Maggi and Enid, was supplied by Sainsbury’s and complimented by many. We are not being paid to advertise but we do recommend the deli counter of your nearest branch if you are organising an event, extremely good value for money and well presented. Ray kindly donated the magnificent Breakaway cake, baked by his sister Pat and two of the original members cut the first slice before it was shared. If anyone has any photographs of the evening please could they see Enid, as there have been requests for copies. Our four DJ’s, Keith, Paul, Gordon & Allan took their turns throughout the evening and kept the dance floor busy with their great choice of disco music. Brett won the top raffle prize of £50 cash and Jane chose the DVD player, which had been previously donated by a member.

We’ve had an e-mail from one of the first members of Breakaway. Peter Smith who now lives in Thailand would love to hear from any of the original members so if you remember him and want to get in touch please ask Enid for his e-mail address.

Kingley Vale

Our walk from West Stoke took us through Kingley Vale.

This is the view from the top of Kingley Vale. The Isle of Wight is on the horizon to the right and to the left of this you can see the inlets of Chichester Harbour and Langstone Harbour. Over on the left we could see Chichester Cathedral, but you won't make it out on this photo.

We've seen deer on several of our walks, but never this many before!

Seven Sisters Walk From Exceat

This walk took us from Exceat, over the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head into Eastbourne.

The walk had lots of ups and downs. This is the view after the first climb up from sea level, looking down on Cuckmere Haven with Seaford Head behind. If you go onto the beach below Seaford Head at low tide, you can find the remains of the first cross-channel telephone cable connecting England to France.

This is where we're heading, along the cliff-tops as far as the eye can see and beyond.

That strange thing on the left is a temporary sculpture. Beyond it, where the cliff dips right down, is Birling gap.

Our first view of Beachy Head lighthouse.

This is Belle Tout, the old lighthouse used before the modern one was built in the sea. Some years ago it was used as the setting for a BBC drama series. The whole structure was once moved back from the cliff edge to prevent it falling into the sea.

With horns like those, it's lucky we didn't have to walk through that lot! But shortly afterwards, we entered a field with a bull wandering around...

This is at Hawkhurst Court, in the middle of The Mens ancient woodland.

When we stopped for lunch this dog appeared. He begged for scraps, but sometimes we're a mean lot!

We had a very steep climb up Wolstonbury Hill, but as you can see below the view was well worth it!

Here we passed by one of those huge fields of yellow that you see at this time of the year.

In the woods!

This poem was on one of the stiles we used near Storrington. It reads:

Although the world was made for you,
The landscape green, the heaven blue,
Scent and colour, taste and sound
And all the good things from the ground.
Although the world was made for you,
God fashioned it for others too,
So leave it sweeter where you pass,
Nor spoil one single blade of grass.
Enjoy the good things but be fair -
God meant each one to have his share.

We found this slow worm stuck on the path - he just couldn't get a grip on the sandy surface, so we helped him along with a push.

We saw lots of gliders being towed up and coming in to land at the gliding club airfield.

We started from Swanbourne Lake in Arundel and although the weather had warmed up after the recent cold spell, it was still rather overcast - not a good day for photos!

Friday 2nd May Darts Night at The Charles Dickens, but in the bar on the ground floor. Arrive in time to go off the oche at 8.15pm. There will be a rolls/sandwiches supper at half time so please put your name down on the notice board so there will be enough for every one. Thanks.

Tuesday 6th May 8.30 – 11pm it’s Quiz Night at the Charles Dickens. For those who would like to take part it is 50p per person to enter – chum up with a friend, two heads are better than one! The winners take all collected as their prize. If you’re not in the mood for having to think, then just have a drink and socialise or burn off some calories with a dance. There will be the usual raffle and chance to win the door prize or snowball if you are a member.

Tuesday 13th May 8.30 – 11pm Club Night. Our last night here for a few weeks. Next week we will meet at The Farmers in Lancing so come along tonight and see if perhaps you could offer a lift to someone. Maybe arrange to car share or take turns in driving for the few weeks we will be there. However you get there, we hope to see as many of you as is possible.

Tuesday 20th May 8.30 – 11pm Our first Club Night at The Farmers in Lancing. Tuesday 27th May 8.30 – 11pm Club Night at The Farmers in Lancing. Whilst we are there the entrance fee will be only £1. We will have music to dance to, the usual raffle and chance to win the door prize or snowball if you are a member.

Saturday 31st May an evening of Alley Skittles at The Black Horse, Findon. The club will pay the £50 for hire of the room and for those who wish to eat it will be £6.50 a head for the buffet. It is dearer than the Maypole at Yapton, but those who had been before were disappointed with the standard of the buffet on our last visit there.

The charity disco in aid of St. Barnabus Hospice on the 29th March, made a profit of £370 and Glyn who organised it would like to thank everyone for their support and hoped that you enjoyed yourselves.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

As the Charles Dickens is being refurbished (see notice board for details), the June Darts Night will be held at the Locomotive in Littlehampton. The proposed date is the 13th Jun. Watch the notice board for details.

In June we will have our first Pitch and Putt game. Ill see if I can arrange a window of sunshine like I did when we had our canal trip! OK. It was good luck!!!!!

You can decide how much of a day out you would like. After playing, those who would like to can have lunch at the Black Rabbit then round off the day with a stroll around Swanbourne Lake, or you can go home at any stage: it’s up to you. The date is to be arranged for the 8th or 15th so watch your notice board.

There’s Green Bowls too! This to be arranged in Littlehampton for the end of June. Club will subsidise by paying for the hire of woods (bowls). Perhaps follow up with a fish and chip supper. Watch your notice board for details.

How To Contact Us

1. At the Charles Dickens, Heene Road, Worthing on a Tuesday evening from 8.30pm onwards - no need to make any arrangements in advance (although you're welcome to if you wish), just come on down.
